ABOUT MS. JIBARITO

Ms. Jibarito is a proud Afro-Puerto Rican entrepreneur from the historic Humboldt Park neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago. She represents a rich blend of cultures, with a mother of Black American and Choctaw Native American heritage and a Puerto Rican father, whose family name is Rodriguez, originally from Gurabo. Embracing the strength and traditions of both sides of her heritage, Ms. Jibarito grew up surrounded by diverse cultural influences that helped shape both her identity and her passion for cooking.

In addition to preparing traditional Puerto Rican cuisine, she also cooks classic soul food dishes that reflect her African American roots. Although she is not fully fluent in Spanish, she understands the language well. When it comes to cooking authentic Puerto Rican food, however, she speaks fluently through bold flavors, traditional ingredients, and recipes rooted in culture and family traditions. In the kitchen, she proudly embodies the spirit of a true Boricua woman.

Raised in diverse and multicultural neighborhoods, Ms. Jibarito developed a deep appreciation for community, culture, and tradition. She attended and graduated from Roberto Clemente Community Academy, located near Division Street and Western Avenue in Chicago. While she did not pursue a college education, her culinary knowledge and expertise were built through real-life experience, cultural roots, and years of hands-on cooking.

In 2009, she relocated to Atlanta. After moving, she quickly noticed the absence of authentic Puerto Rican restaurants—something that had been a staple of her upbringing in Chicago, where traditional Puerto Rican cuisine could be found throughout the Humboldt Park community. Motivated to fill that gap, she made it her mission to bring the authentic flavors and cultural experience of Puerto Rican food to the South and later expanded her presence to Dallas in 2020.

Among her signature offerings is her version of the famous Jibarito sandwich. The sandwich was invented in the early 1990s by her longtime friend Juan Peter Figueroa, whom she has known since the age of nine. A fellow Humboldt Park native and former owner of the well-known Borinquen Restaurant near California Avenue and Wabansia, Figueroa created what would become a globally recognized sandwich. Since its creation, the Jibarito has inspired countless versions around the world, but its roots remain firmly planted in Chicago’s Puerto Rican community.

In February 2019, Ms. Jibarito officially launched her authentic Puerto Rican food business, beginning with sales on the delivery platforms Uber Eats and DoorDash. As her brand grew, she expanded beyond prepared meals and began creating customized kitchen essentials, including glass cutting boards, oven mitts, potholders, and coffee mugs.

She later introduced her “Ms. Jibarito” line of marinades and seasonings—featuring traditional staples such as Sofrito, Sazon, Adobo, and All-Purpose Seasoning—all made without MSG. Her commitment to quality, authenticity, and cultural pride continues to drive her brand forward.

Looking ahead, Ms. Jibarito plans to expand her business by investing in a food truck and opening a take-out, food-to-go restaurant. Her mission remains clear: to share the authentic taste, culture, and spirit of Puerto Rico while bringing communities together through food.
